As of 8 August 1960, a total of 8 Redstone launches were planned, the first two of which were to be unmanned. The May 1961 launch date is inferred from other program milestones at this time. This eighth Mercury Redstone flight has not been found in later program documents. Since launch vehicle Redstone MR-1 was never returned to service after the Mercury Redstone 1 launch pad abort in November 1960, there may have been a budgetary decision not to refurbish the launch vehicle, which would have left only seven flight-ready Redstone launch vehicles.
