In terms of previous U.S. manned spaceflight experience, Gemini 4 was a long-duration mission. Its four-day mission was comparable to what hade been contemplated in extending the capabilities of the Mercury spacecraft to the limit. However, four days did not approach the limits of the Gemini spacecraft, and it was the standard duration for later Gemini docking missions with Agena target vehicles.

Ed White performed the first U.S. EVA. More than duplicating Leonov's feat three months earlier on Voskhod 2, White was able to maneuver around the spacecraft using a hand-held thruster.
