On 8 September 1961 NASA issued a work order to study one-day orbital flights of a full-scale but lightweight (7,000 pounds) Apollo Command Module (CM) on the Titan II launch vehicle. The CM's batteries would sufficient to provide power and the Service Module's fuel cells would not be needed. Likewise, the CM's Reaction Control System was sufficient to provide attitude control during the flight. To save weight, the CM would carry only a crew of two.
This concept is not to be confused with a proposal for a acaled-down Apollo CM to carry two men to the lunar surface on a Saturn C-5 direct ascent mission.
