The August 1960 long range plan for the manned spaceflight program called for a fourth three-stage Saturn C-1 suborbital flight of an Apollo Command Module in 1964: "reentry of a developmental capsule under the most severe heating conditions," thus simulating a return from the Moon. The launch date of January 1965 is interpolated. NASA announced the redesign of the Saturn C-1 as a two-stage launch vehicle on 1 June 1961.
